KS Synaxis and KS Synaxis Sans release

In 1949, the great agiographer Fotis Kontoglou wrote “The Mourning Synaxary of Constantine the Palaiologos”. It was published in the “Kivotos” magazine, in 1953 and was republished in his book “The Painful Romiosy”, in 1963.

The diversity of the Kontoglou’s incomparable way of writing as well as the plethora of the unconventional and astonishing ligatures can only be compared with the works of the old Byzantine calligraphers! The inspiration for the “Synaxis” and “Synaxis Sans” font families came from this famous manuscript, hoping to bring a small sense of the style of the prototype.

The “Synaxis” family consists of a single weight and a set of 650 greek lowercase ligatures. Due to the complexity of the character format it needs special treatment in its use on the computer. It supports the complete Greek polytonic and Latin writing system.

The “Synaxis Sans” family is a more modern and minimalistic depiction of the previous one, with a smoother typographic character, but always close to the style of the original. It consists of 4 weights (Normal, Italic, Bold and BoldItalic) and contains a small set of Greek upper and lowercase ligatures. It supports the complete Greek polytonic and Latin writing system.

 

Κυκλοφορία KS Synaxis καὶ KS Synaxis Sans

Τὸ 1949, ὁ μεγάλος ἁγιογράφος Φώτης Κόντογλου ἔγραψε τὸ «Θρηνητικὸ συναξάρι Κωνσταντίνου τοῦ Παλαιολόγου». Δημοσιεύθηκε ὁλόκληρο στὸ περιοδικὸ «Κιβωτός», τὸ 1953 καὶ ἀναδημοσιεύθηκε στὸ βιβλίο του «Ἡ Πονεμένη Ρωμιοσύνη», τὸ 1963.

Ὁ Κόντογλου χρησιμοποιεῖ ἕναν ἀπαράμιλλο τρόπο γραφῆς, ποὺ ὅμοιό του μπορεῖ νὰ συναντήσει κανεὶς μόνο σὲ παλιὰ βυζαντινὰ χειρόγραφα! Κανένα γράμμα δὲν εἶναι ὅμοιο καὶ ὁ τρόπος σύμπλεξης εἶναι τόσο ἐκπληκτικὸς καὶ ἀντισυμβατικὸς ποὺ δὲν μπορεῖς παρὰ νὰ ὑποκλιθεῖς μπροστὰ στὴν πένα καὶ τὸ ταλέντο τοῦ ἀνθρώπου. Ἀπὸ τὸν χειρόγραφο αὐτὸ θησαυρὸ προέρχεται ἡ ἔμπνευση γιὰ τὶς γραμματοσειρὲς «Σύναξις» καὶ «Σύναξις Σάνς», ἐλπίζοντας νὰ δώσει μιὰ μικρὴ αἴσθηση ἀπὸ τὸ ἐξαίρετο ὕφος τοῦ πρωτοτύπου.

Ἡ οἰκογένεια «Σύναξις» ἀποτελεῖται ἀπὸ ἕνα καὶ μόνο βάρος καὶ μιὰ σειρὰ ἀπὸ 650 συμπλέγματα ἑλληνικῶν πεζῶν. Λόγῳ τῆς πολυπλοκότητας τῆς μορφῆς τῶν χαρακτήρων, χρειάζεται εἰδικὴ μεταχείριση στὴ χρήση της στὸν ὑπολογιστή. Ὑποστηρίζει τὸ πλῆρες ἑλληνικὸ πολυτονικὸ καὶ λατινικὸ σύστημα γραφῆς.

Ἡ οἰκογένεια «Σύναξις Σὰνς» ἀποτελεῖ μιὰ πιὸ σύγχρονη καὶ ἀφαιρετικὴ ἀπεικόνιση τῆς προηγούμενης, μὲ πιὸ στρωτὸ τυπογραφικὸ χαρακτήρα, ἀλλὰ πάντα κοντὰ στὸ ὕφος τοῦ πρωτοτύπου. Ἀποτελεῖται ἀπὸ 4 βάρη (Normal, Italic, Bold καὶ BoldItalic) καὶ περιέχει μιὰ μικρὰ σειρὰ ἑλληνικῶν κεφαλαίων καὶ πεζῶν συμπλεγμάτων. Ὑποστηρίζει τὸ πλῆρες ἑλληνικὸ πολυτονικὸ καὶ λατινικὸ σύστημα γραφῆς.
