Ἡ Ἀμάλθεια εἶναι σύμφωνα μὲ τὴ μυθολογία ἡ τροφός τοῦ Δία, τὸ διάστημα ποὺ μεγάλωνε κρυμμένος σὲ ἕνα σπήλαιο στὴν Κρήτη (Ἰδαῖο Ἄντρο) γιὰ νὰ προστατευτεῖ ἀπὸ τὸν πατέρα του Κρόνο. Ἡ κατσίκα Ἀμάλθεια, τρέφοντας μὲ τὸ γάλα της τὸν μικρὸ Δία, βοήθησε μαζὶ μὲ τὴ Μέλισσα καὶ τοὺς Κουρῆτες στὴ γέννηση καὶ ἀνατροφὴ τοῦ Δία, ποὺ δοξάστηκε ὡς ὁ μεγαλύτερος ἀπὸ τοὺς δώδεκα θεοὺς τοῦ Ὀλύμπου.

Ἡ Ἀμάλθεια εἶμαι μιὰ γραμματοσειρὰ στὴν ὁποία συνυπάρχουν, παράξενα, τὸ παλαιὸ καὶ τὸ καινούργιο. Ἕνα ὑβρίδιο ποὺ περιέχει ὑφολογικὰ χαρακτηριστικὰ βυζαντινοῦ κειμένου ἀπὸ τὴ μιὰ πλευρὰ καὶ σύγχρονες γεωμετρικές φόρμες ἀπὸ τὴν ἄλλη. Διακριτικὲς γραμμὲς αὐστηρότητας ποὺ περιέχουν ὡστόσο, καλὰ κρυμμένη, τὴν ποίηση καὶ τὸ ἄρωμα τῶν παλαιῶν καλλιγραφικῶν χειρογράφων. Μιὰ γραμματοσειρὰ κατάλληλη γιὰ ὁποιαδήποτε χρήση κειμένου.
Περιέχει μιὰ μικρὴ ἀλλὰ πολὺ ἐνδιαφέρουσα σειρὰ συμπλεγμάτων κεφαλαίων καὶ πεζῶν χαρακτήρων. Διατίθεται σε 3 βάρη, Regular, Light, SemiBold, μαζὶ μὲ τὰ ἀντίστοιχα πλάγια.


KS Amalthea

The Amalthea is, according to mythology, the nurse of Zeus, during the time he was growing up hiding in a cave in Crete (Ideon Andron) to protect himself from his father Cronus. The goat Amalthea nourishing Zeus, helped along with Melissa and Curetes the birth and upbringing of Zeus, who was glorified as the largest of the twelve gods of Olympus.

Amalthea is a font in which the old and the new coexist, in a strange way. A hybrid style containing textural attributes of byzantine texts on the one hand and modern geometric forms on the other. Discreet minimal lines that embody, well hidden, the poetry and aroma of the old calligraphic manuscripts. A font suitable for general use of text.
Contains a small but very interesting set of lower and upercase ligatures. Available in three weights, Regular, Light, SemiBold, together with the corresponding italics.

Ἡ νέα γραμματοσειρὰ «Θέσις» τῆς Ἀναγραφῆς εἶναι ἐμπνευσμένη ἀπὸ βυζαντινὸ χειρόγραφο Εὐαγγελιστάριο (14ος αἰ.) ποὺ φυλάσσεται στὸ Μουσεῖο Λογοτεχνίας, στὸ Ἰάσιο τῆς Ρουμανίας.

The new Anagrafi “Thesis” font is inspired by a byzantine Evangelistario manuscript (Gospels lectionary, 14th cent.) kept in the Museum of Literature, in Iasi, Romania.

Ὅταν πρὶν χρόνια κυκλοφόρησε ἡ γραμματοσειρὰ Μπουλετέ (Bouletee), εἶχα ὑποσχεθεῖ ἕναν καινούργιο τύπο της στὸ μέλλον, πιὸ κοντὰ στὸ ὕφος καὶ τὸ πνεῦμα τοῦ πρωτοτύπου κειμένου. Ἡ KS Bouletee λειτούργησε σύμφωνα μὲ τὰ δεδομένα σχεδιασμοῦ της, κυρίως σὲ περιπτώσεις ποὺ χρειαζόταν μιὰ σοβαρὴ, ἱεροπρεπὴς εἰκόνα κειμένου. Βεβαίως, ἦταν ἀπαραίτητη ἡ προσπάθεια γιὰ ἕνα γράμμα πιὸ στρωτό, ὁμαλὸ καὶ ἁρμονικό, ὥστε νὰ προσεγγίζει καλύτερα τὴ σύγχρονη πραγματικότητα σὲ μορφὴ κειμένου.

Ἡ «Θέσις» εἶναι μιὰ διαφορετικὴ προσπάθεια. Τὸ πρωτότυπο κείμενο ἀκολουθεῖται πολύ πιστότερα, ὅμως ἐκ τῶν πραγμάτων, πρέπει νὰ γίνουν τροποποιήσεις γιὰ νὰ κάνουν τὸ κείμενο κατάλληλο γιὰ ἀνάγνωση καὶ τυπογραφικὴ χρήση. Τὸ πρωτότυπο Εὐαγγελιστάριο φυλάσσεται στὸ Μουσεῖο Λογοτεχνίας, στὸ Ἰάσιο τῆς Ρουμανίας, καὶ χρονολογεῖται κυρίως κατὰ τὸν 14 αἰώνα.

Ὁ συγκεκριμένος τύπος γραφῆς Μπουλετὲ εἶναι ἐξαιρετικὰ καθαρὸς καὶ διαθέτει ἁρμονία στὴ γεωμετρία τῶν χαρακτήρων, ἡ ὁποία εἶναι συνήθως ἀκριβὴς κατὰ τὴν ἐπανάληψή. Τὸ γράμμα εἶναι σχετικὰ ἰσόπαχο, μὲ τὶς ἀπαραίτητες ἀπολήξεις στὸ σταμάτημα ἢ τὴν ἀλλαγὴ κατεύθυνσης τῆς πένας. Αὐτὸ ὅμως ποὺ ἔχει μεγάλη καλλιτεχνικὴ καὶ αἰσθητική ἀξία εἶναι ὁ τρόπος μὲ τὸν ὁποῖο ὁ βυζαντινὸς καλλιγράφος χειρίζεται τὴν πολυπλοκότητα τοῦ κειμένου. Οἱ χαρακτῆρες χρησιμοποιοῦνται σὲ μιὰ εὑρεία μορφολογικὴ κλίμακα ἀνάλογα μὲ τὰ γράμματα ποὺ προηγοῦνται ἢ ἀκολουθοῦν, δίνοντας ἔτσι στό κείμενο μιὰ πολὺ ζωντανὴ εἰκόνα. Ἕνα ἄλλο χαρακτηριστικὸ αὐτοῦ τοῦ τύπου γραφῆς εἶναι ἡ μεγάλη ποικιλία συμπλεγμάτων, ἀλλὰ καὶ οἱ ἐνδιαφέρουσες συντομεύσεις ποὺ χρησιμοποιοῦνται γιὰ συγκεκριμένες λέξεις.

Ἡ γραμματοσειρὰ «Θέσις» θὰ περιλαμβάνει πολλαπλοὺς τύπους ὅμοιων χαρακτήρων, συμπλέγματα γραμμάτων, εἰδικὲς συντομογραφίες, καθὼς καὶ διακοσμητικὰ στολίδια, ὅπως στὴν πρωτότυπη μορφὴ τοῦ βυζαντινοῦ χειρογράφου. Στὸ συγκεκριμένο Εὐαγγελιστάριο δὲν χρησιμοποιοῦνται κεφαλαία στὴν ἀρχὴ κάθε πρότασης. Στὶς ἀρχές τῶν κεφαλαίων τοῦ βιβλίου ὑπάρχουν κεφαλαιογράμματοι τίτλοι διακοσμητικοῦ χαρακτήρα, ποὺ ἐπειδὴ ὅμως βρίσκονται σὲ πλήρη ἀντίθεση μὲ τὸ ὕφος καὶ τὸ πνεῦμα τῆς γραφῆς, δὲν μποροὺν νὰ χρησιμοποιηθοῦν. Ἔτσι, εἶναι ἐπιβεβλημένο νὰ σχεδιαστοῦν κεφαλαία μὲ βάση τὸ συγκεκριμένο ὕφος. Στὸ τέλος, καὶ μόνο ἂν αὐτό φέρνει κάποιο ἰκανοποιητικὸ ἀποτέλεσμα, θὰ γίνει προσπάθεια σχεδιασμοῦ κυριλλικοῦ καὶ λατινικοῦ κειμένου.

Πρέπει ἐπίσης, νὰ τονίσω πὼς ἡ ἐξαιρετικὰ ἐνδιαφέρουσα γεωμετρικὴ φόρμα Μπουλετέ δημιουργεῖ μιὰ πρόκληση γιὰ τὸ μέλλον. Τὴν ἀπόπειρα σχεδιασμοῦ μιᾶς σύγχρονης καὶ μοντέρνας γραμματοσειρᾶς κειμένου ποὺ θὰ ἔχει τὶς ἀπαρχές της στὸν 14ο αἰώνα!

 

KS Thesis

Years ago, when KS Bouletee font was released, I promised a new type in the future, closer to the style and spirit of the original text. The KS Bouletee operated according to the data of planning, especially in cases of a serious, solemn image text need. Certainly, it was necessary to design a more smooth and harmonious letter, so as to better fit modern reality in text form.

The “Thesis” is a different project. The original text is followed very closely, but in fact, modifications should be made to make the text suitable for reading and typographic use. The original Evangelistarion (Gospels lectionary) is kept at the Museum of Literature, in Iasi, Romania, and dates mostly during the 14th century.

Bouletee writing style is extremely clean and harmonious in characters geometry. Strokes are in general of equal thickness, with the necessary letter lines’ endings at stopping or changing direction of the pen. But what has great artistic and aesthetic value is the way in which the byzantine calligrapher handle the complexity of the text. Characters are used in a wide morphological range depending on the letters that come before or after giving into the text a very vivid sence. Another feature of this writing style is the great variety of ligatures and the interesting shortcuts used for specific words.

The font “Thesis” will include multiple types of identical characters, ligatures, special abbreviations, as well as decorative ornaments, as in the original form of the byzantine manuscript. Calligrapher does not use any capitals in this Evangelistarion, at the beginning of each sentence.
Capitals are used in the begining of some chapters, but since they are in complete contrast to the general writing style, they can not be used. Thus, I have to design capitals according to the specific style. In the end, and only if we can see good results, will try to design Cyrillic and Latin text.

It should also be stressed that the extremely interesting geometric form of Boulette style is a really challenge for the future: the design of a modern and contemporary text font coming from the 14th century!
